Illustration Friday: Polar

I've always had a fascination with the iconic characters on packaging and in advertising. They help establish a personal connection with a particular product and become powerful brand identifiers. Because the audience is much more fragmented in today's marketplace, it is harder to sustain a character. So, I often imagine them in an imaginary parallel universe where they travel across boundaries of time and culture. A couple of my favorite sites are the Advertising Icon Museum and The Imaginary World.

My inspiration for this week's colored pencil illustration was the vintage Eskimo Pie packaging. Here, the iconic Eskimo Pie eskimos eat Chilly Bites... the lesser known polar ice brand in their parallel universe.
